The Last of Us Director Talks Gay and Lesbian Characters

Tackling same-sex equality has become a real hot button topic over the years, yet we’ve not seen a ton on the issue play out in gaming. As the subject is now becoming more prevalent in the industry, one insider gives his thoughts on the matter.

Bruce Straley, Director of the hit The Last of Us , was quick to point out that their ambiguous ending (that called into question the sexuality of their main character Ellie) is far less important than her being depicted as a strong, relatable heroin. “It’s like ‘who cares?’ A good character is a good character and that’s what we’re after. We went out of our way to make her the most capable and independent and feisty person that she could be…We wanted to make sure that players felt like ‘Ellie is awesome.” He explains.

While Straley makes it clear that this should really be a non-issue, it’s not something that they feel the need to press people about. However, he does reveal just how pleased he was from the positive response. While he states that it’s “…not an agenda but by all means,” they are “…happy that people resonate with the character and we’re happy that it does make a statement.”

Tune in tomorrow for more on what role gaming has to play in this controversial issue facing the Gay and Lesbian community.
