Batman and Superman finally got a chance to sort out their differences this past weekend by beating the living tar out of each other. The destruction their epic battle leaves behind is hilariously ironic, but in the end it works simply because it’s fricking Batman vs. Superman. After seeing DC’s two biggest stars work things out in the schoolyard, I got thinking about the best superhero fights ever conceived. Let’s take a look at the best cinematic superhero fights of the last century.
Dark Knight vs. Bane
Batman’s bout with Superman isn’t the first time he’s had an epic showdown. In fact, Batman vs. Bane in The Dark Knight Rises was pretty stellar. The one aspect that always stood out to me in this fight was the sheer grit of Batman’s determination as Bane continually knocks him into next week. The emotion both characters portrayed was impressively intense.
Blade vs. Vampire Army
Ok, so this technically doesn’t constitute as a superhero battle, but Blade does kick some serious tail and he is one of the best and most underrated superheroes of all time. The way Blade walks into the vampire party and completely wrecks the show is a thing of superhero beauty.
Superman vs. General Zod
The lead-up to Batman vs. Superman came in the form of the destructive battle between Superman and General Zod in Man of Steel. The lead up was fantastic and the final fight scene was well worth the wait. Not only does an entire city suffer and get destroyed, but General Zod finally gets the beatdown he deserves.
Spiderman vs. Doc Octopus
The final fight scene between Spiderman and Doc Ock was certainly something taken directly from the pages of an early Stan Lee comic. The pinnacle of the battle that unfolds during Spider Man 2 is when Peter Parker gets crushed by a train, only to come back like a total boss and wreck Doc Ock.
Hulk vs. Abomination
There’s nothing better than two enormous superheroes beating each other to death. I know, it sounds barbaric when put in that light but Hulk is literally trying to rip Abomination’s head off through most of the fight in Hulk . The two heroes look hilarious as they romp through the city, but boy do they mean business, especially when Hulk smacks Abomination with two halves of a police cruiser. Man, this was an awesome battle.
Thor vs. Loki
This battle itself isn’t anything out of the norm for exciting superhero throw downs. Rather, it’s the raw emotion that comes along with Thor fighting his brother. Now this isn’t just your typical bro on bro fight that ends in a handshake and a round of drinks. No, these are two powerful deities trying to end the life of the other, which makes for one drama-filled battle.
Batman vs. Joker
Sheesh, Batman doesn’t get along with anyone these days, not that he and the Joker have ever been buddies. The Batman vs. Joker fight from The Dark Knight, and just about every Batman comic or animated series ever created, is a thing of beauty. Joker always seems to be outmatched because Batman is simply too strong. However, Joker always seems to hit the Bat where it counts and this fight is no exception. Did somebody say crowbar?
Captain America vs. Winter Solider
Now this was one epic battle – Winter Solider held nothing back when going after the ageless wonder. The film as whole wasn’t the greatest piece of cinematography, however this fight scene in particular was well worth the price of admission. That trusty hilariously oversized shield actually came in handy for once.
Iron Man vs. Thor
One of the most underrated superhero fights scenes in film history, Iron Man vs. Thor is the icing on cake in The Avengers . The short battle is riddled with hilarious one-liners as both characters perfectly complement each other. I’ve always been particularly fond of Iron Man ever since I was a young kid, but watching Thor headbutt him like it’s nothing makes the entire film that much more enjoyable to watch.
The Avengers vs. The Chitauri Invaders
This final battle has to go down as the greatest in superhero fighting history. There’s no other time you’ll possibly get the incredible cast of heroes together, all fighting for the same cause. The Chitauri invaders are merely a pawn for the Avengers to absolutely wreck havoc on. I mean seriously, the Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, and Captain America – it’s never going to get much better than that.
