Torchlight II Is Huge!

None

Torchlight II is so big that, as it currently exists, it exceeds the Xbox 360’s memory limitations. The game would have to be comprehensively redesigned, says Runic Games CEO Max Schaefer, in order to launch on Xbox Live Arcade.

In the past, Xbox Live Arcade titles have been trimmed back because of Microsoft-imposed size caps on downloadable titles. Certain major releases, however—along with the increase in available storage space on newer units—have led to increases in that initial cap. What these increases can’t fix, however, is the system’s memory limit, which was already run up against by the original Torchlight.

Schaefer notes that some may have already experienced slowdown in the first Torchlight title on XBLA when the action grew hectic. Torchlight II, with its multiplayer focus, is going to be exponentially more demanding for a system’s memory. This problem, notes the Runic Twitter feed, is one that would not be solved entirely, even by releasing the game on disc (something that would present further problems, such as finding a publisher). Schaefer has not, however, ruled the Xbox 360 out as a potential platform, saying that, “We would have to be redoing the interface for a console release anyway, just like we did with Torchlight 1, so it would probably make sense to do something more specifically tailored to the Xbox.”

Runic is planning to bring Torchlight II out this fall on the PC. For more information on the game, check out our preview here .
