Vita Plays Well With PSP, Firmware Streamlined

None

Are you annoyed at how frequently you have to update your PSP and PS3? Well, Sony is trying to develop a new way to update the Vita.

In an interview with Game Informer, Shu Yoshida of Sony said that they can’t really reduce the frequency of firmware updates without decreasing the quality of service as well. Instead, they are going to attempt to make firmware updates less intrusive. As of now, firmware updates are front-loaded. Before you start gaming you have to download any updates you need, and they have to apply before you even start your gaming session. While Yoshida said he couldn’t speak about particulars, one would assume Sony is attempting to develop a way for firmware updates to download in the background and install before system shutdown, rather than the other way around.

In other PS Vita news, it turns out that the PS Vita is not only backward compatible with the PSP in terms of game library, but also in terms of multiplayer. If both a Vita and a PSP have a downloaded title installed, they can play multiplayer versus each other via ad-hoc.

Unfortunately, this does not work with disc-based games. Sucks to be you, UMD owners.
