Carmine: once a throw-away, faceless Cog in the first Gears of War, named for the specific shade of red the expendable Star Trek crew members wore in the original series. He died. His brother, however, appeared at the beginning of the sequel and endeared himself to players with a combination of youthful optimism, hero worship, and, most impressive, actual competence. Spoiler: He died, too, but he lasted long enough that his death actually meant something to the player. He also revealed the existence of two more brothers, also Cogs, at least one of whom is slated to appear in Gears of War 3.
