What Is Carmine’s Fate?

What Is Carmine’s Fate?

None

Carmine: once a throw-away, faceless Cog in the first Gears of War, named for the specific shade of red the expendable Star Trek crew members wore in the original series. He died. His brother, however, appeared at the beginning of the sequel and endeared himself to players with a combination of youthful optimism, hero worship, and, most impressive, actual competence.

Spoiler: He died, too, but he lasted long enough that his death actually meant something to the player. He also revealed the existence of two more brothers, also Cogs, at least one of whom is slated to appear in Gears of War 3.

There was a contest last year to determine whether GoW3’s Clayton Carmine would live or die. (The other thing about Carmines: their first names follow the alphabet. Anthony, Benjamin, now Clayton—A, B, C…) Epic wrote both possible scenarios into the script, just in case the game was leaked ahead of time. As such, Carmine’s fate will remain undetermined until September 20, when Gears of War 3 comes out on the Xbox 360.
