September was a great month for Nintendo. The NPD Group’s report came in and Super Mario Maker placed sixth on the list of the top ten best-selling games. While that may not sound like a huge deal, it’s important to note that it is the only game on the list that is a platform exclusive; all other titles enjoyed sales across 2-5 consoles.
Nintendo responded to the report stating that Super Mario Maker has sold over half a million copies total (retail and digital) as of October 19. Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer also did very well, selling 115,000 units in its first week. All of this contributed to some beefy hardware sales. Nintendo reports that Wii U sales were up by 110% over August, no doubt thanks to the success of Super Mario Maker , and 3DS sales increased by 25%.
