“Wreck-It Ralph” Tops Weekend Box Office

“Wreck-It Ralph” Tops Weekend Box Office

Despite the destruction wrought by Hurricane Sandy, or perhaps due in part to the super-storm driving those along the East Coast from their homes to escape the boredom and chill of a power-less existence, theaters saw a substantial turnout this past weekend. One film in particular, though, took the top slot at the box office with $49.1 million in earnings.

I’m speaking of Disney’s Wreck-It Ralph , which beat out fellow newcomer Flight and Ben Affleck’s critically acclaimed Argo for the number one spot.

The movie is a 3D animated, family friendly feature that contains references both explicit and implicit to the rich history of videogames. From appearances by Q*Bert, the ghosts of Pac-Man fame, and even SEGA’s iconic Sonic the Hedgehog to environments that parody modern shooters such as Halo and Call of Duty, Wreck-It Ralph looks to anthropomorphize videogames in much the same way as Toy Story did physical toys.

Wreck-It Ralph is rated PG and is showing in theaters nationwide.
