The Xbox Game Preview Program is pretty much the same thing as Steam Early Access and GOG Games in Development. Basically the program allows you to purchase games that haven’t officially launched yet. You do so with the understanding that these games are still in development, and that your gameplay and feedback will being contributing to the development process. It’s a bit of a gamble, really, but it’s a nice way to get ahold of a game that you’re excited for a little bit early, and feel like you’re making an impact on its progress.
The program launched last year on Xbox One, and has been a relative success. Notable games have been offered through the preview program, including Elite: Dangerous, The Long Dark, and We Happy Few . As Microsoft continues to unify Xbox One and Windows 10 into a single platform with its “Play Anywhere” initiative, the announcement came today out of Gamescom that the Preview Program would be expanding to Windows 10 as well. The first game to be offered early will be Everspace , an “action-focused single-player space shooter combining roguelike elements with top-notch visuals and a captivating non-linear story.” Expect the program to roll out later this year.
