Xbox One Will Not Support Current XBLA Titles

The announcement that the Xbox One would not be backwards compatible with Xbox 360 titles was a solid, but expected, disappointment. Sony isn’t supporting previous generations with the PlayStation 4, either. Now, though, Phil Spencer of Microsoft has confirmed that this lack of backwards compatibility extends beyond merely on-disc games. Your library of digital XBLA titles will not transfer over, either.

It makes rational sense. The Xbox One is not compatible with games designed for the Xbox 360, so why would it be compatible with digital content created specifically with that platform’s hardware and software idiosyncrasies in mind? It’s another blow, though not a wholly unexpected one.

Phil Spencer did have one solid piece of advice for gamers who want to continue playing their digital XBLA libraries. Keep your Xbox 360. “Keep that as a vibrant part of the ecosystem,” he said.
