10 Year Old Minecraft Whiz Kid Wins Championship

10 Year Old Minecraft Whiz Kid Wins Championship

I’ve been trying to decide for myself whether or not I believe eSports is going to be the sensation that industry analysts are predicting it’s going to be. Supposedly by 2018 eSports will be the highest grossing spectator “sport” in the world, surpassing football, soccer, and Nascar by far. Every kid growing up dreams of getting paid to play video games, and now that’s not looking like such a far-fetched fantasy. Not for Julien Wiltshire, anyway.

Julien recently won the first ever Minecraft National Championship. The championship was put on by Super League Gaming, which held the competition in movie theaters across the world. Julien is only 10 years old, and bested competitors who were much older and reportedly far more experienced than he. Contestants were judged over a six week period according to their creativity, critical thinking, and teamwork. Julien won a $5,000 scholarship, as well as a snazzy Super Bolt Trophy, which will undoubtedly go on a shelf between his soccer plaques and amiibo until he goes to college, where that $5,000 will pay for a single semester, God willing. Congratulations, Julien.
