Activision Feels Games Don’t Need to Play Like Movies

We’ve already established here at CheatCC that video game movies are doomed to fail . It would appear that there are those at Activision who feel that reversing this formula would be equally disastrous.

Eric Hirshberg (CEO of publishing at Activision) recently told Edge that he doesn’t feel the need to embrace the current trend of making games play more like movies. “I think this is inherently what games do best and so I’d expect that to be the basis of games for a long time to come. I don’t know if romantic comedy fits that model. I think that’s something that movies and TV do well. There’s this strange desire to morph games into movies or have them behave more like movies; I don’t share that desire. Games are wonderful as they are and do different things better than other forms of media,” said Hirshberg.

Also, Hirshberg had some encouraging comments for those in the indie community, as he feels that much of the innovation starts on the independent scene. He tells Edge: “The ecosystem of innovation usually starts at the independent level in lots of art forms.”

Activision has two big next-gen releases on the way, with Call of Duty: Ghosts and Destiny (brought to you by Halo creators, Bungie).
