Time Magazine has recently released its list of the best video games of the year (does video gaming count as a “serious” form of media now?), and topping their list of the best games of the year is psychological thriller Alan Wake. Although the game did get some critical praise, it was far from the best-reviewed game of the year and seems a curious choice for game of the year when titles like Red Dead Redemption, Heavy Rain, Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood, Call of Duty: Black Ops, Super Mario Galaxy 2, and God of War III have been making quite a splash both in review scores and sales.  Although the decision does seem a bit curious, Time backed up its high praise of Alan Wake saying that they enjoyed the game’s dark themes and Hitchcock-style suspense. Not much was said about the gameplay though, which many critics were not afraid to criticize. |
