Battle.net, PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE Were Under DDoS Attacks, FBI Investigating

As reported by Shacknews on Sunday, August 24, several gaming servers, including Battle.net, PlayStation Network and Xbox LIVE, were subjugated to DDoS attacks over the course of several hours. Even servers for Riot Game’s League of Legends and Grinding Gear Games’ Path of Exile were also under attack.

A group of hackers calling themselves “Lizard Squad”, and Twitter was soon updated with various tweets from official accounts associated to the servers that were affected. It wasn’t just servers, the group even targeted Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) president John Smedley’s flight to San Diego with a phony bomb threat. For security reasons, the flight was diverted to Phoenix.

After some time, it was later confirmed via PlayStation.Blog that no personal information was leaked or stolen during the DDoS attack on the PlayStation Network. In a statement given to Shacknews, a SOE representative explained on the behalf of Smedley that [they] can confirm that at this time the FBI is handling this directly, ” in regards to the bomb threat. According to Shacknews, the representative couldn’t provide further information, as the situation had become a matter of national security.

Xbox LIVE was the next target, and so was Battle.net a second time thereafter. At the end of the whole affair, all affiliated officials to the affected servers are declaring that they are no longer experiencing problems; all seems green for the time being.

We’ll bring you more news on the DDoS attacks should further information reach our ears.
