Call of Duty: Black Ops may be the biggest-selling game of all time, but it also has the distinction of being the most pirated game of the year, racking up about 4.2 million torrent downloads. Black Ops is actually in some pretty good company when it comes to pirating, as most successful media has a large pirate share.  For instance, Avatar, which has the record for making the most money at the US box office, was the most pirated film of 2010. This leads credence to the theory that many people who pirate do indeed end up purchasing the media that they illegally download. What is not known is how this type of “try-before-you-buy” pirating affects sales, as it could increase revenue as pirates purchase games they like or decrease them as other pirates prefer to keep their stolen copies. |
