An enlightening set of interviews with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer over on Gizmodo hinted at the possible introduction of external Blu-ray drive devices to the Xbox 360 platform. In fact, the Microsoft honcho even went so far as to indirectly confirm the prospect when he denied that Blu-ray was not going to be integrated into the platform: “Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.” Hmm… Sounds like Ballmer might have let something slip. Gizmodo followed up with Microsoft on the subject and got this reply: “Our immediate solution for Blu-ray-quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we’re not ready to comment.” I guess only time will tell, but the chances Blu-ray will head to the system do seem markedly higher. |
