Diablo III’s Second Class Digital Citizens

Diablo III’s Second Class Digital Citizens

None

In a launch flooded with controversy, Diablo III still managed to hit hard with big numbers and, already, a vibrant community has sprung up around the long-awaited hack ‘n’ slash dungeon-crawler. Paradise has been flawed since day one, however, with a rocky server situation and high-level balance issues. Many of these are issues that Blizzard has either fixed or begun work on, but there are some problems that are intentional, and smack of a strange thought process at the long-running developer.

Last week, Blizzard rolled out the Real Money Auction House. Some players, me included, were met with a message when they tried to switch over to the RMAH that stated that digital purchases of the game were to have a three-day waiting period before they could access it. Over five days later, with no access in sight, I changed my password, authenticated my account, and was able to switch over. This may have been tied to, or at least a precursor to, today’s news: Diablo III digital purchases, from here on out, will have up to a three-day waiting period (depending on how long it takes to review and verify the account).

During this period, the account tied to the purchase will only have access to the Starter edition of Diablo III, which limits progress, leveling, the social aspects of the game and access to the auction houses. It’s ostensibly to prevent fraud, but it feels like there must have been a better way than this to protect the gameplay of legitimate account holders, no?
