EVE Online: Now In Japanese

EVE Online: Now In Japanese

None

In an historic move, massively multiplayer way-of-life EVE Online is getting a full Japanese localization. In addition to reports stating that both EVE and its PlayStation 3 shooter expansion, DUST 514, will be localized for Japanese audiences, new job listings on CCP’s website confirm that the developer is looking for Japanese-speaking game masters. According to reports, CCP has partnered with popular Maple Story publisher Nexon to bring EVE to Japan’s shores.

One might question why this is such a big deal. After all, when games are supremely popular and may have mass appeal in other territories, they generally get a localization for that territory, no? EVE Online, however, takes its player-base very seriously. The game doesn’t relegate different regions to disparate servers, but throws everyone together under one roof. When the Russian language edition was released, the new Russian players formed their own contacts and relationships, the effects of which were felt throughout the EVE economy. As such, adding a new territory with such a steep language barrier is a gutsy move—one that could have unintended, but no doubt entertaining, consequences.

EVE Online will be available in Japan later this year, with DUST 514 to launch in 2012.
