Even EA Doesn’t Think BF 3 Will Outsell MW3

None

It seems that EA’s Eric Brown is slightly more levelheaded than the rest of the overly aggressive mudslingers that make up EA’s staff. In phone call to investors, Brown brought a bit of reality to the table:

“Just to be clear,” Brown Said, “the [Call of Duty] franchise did about 23 million units worldwide. We don’t expect to surpass them with this year’s Battlefield 3, just to be very clear. We expect to grow unit sales of Battlefield 3 over its predecessor title, Battlefield: Bad Company 2.”

This is quite a different type of statement than the ones we we’ve been hearing from EA’s big wigs recently. “We don’t take things lightly. If we’re going to go after a category, we intend to lead. We have a very big competitor there but they’re going to get some competition this Christmas for the first time in a long time,” said Frank Gibeau, President of EA.

Eric Brown’s statement is much closer to reality than Gibeau’s. The Call of Duty franchise has the largest fan base of any game on earth, and it’s not showing any signs of weakening. But this doesn’t mean that Battlefield 3 will be a failure. In fact, in many ways, it gives EA the freedom to make a superior game. But superiority doesn’t necessarily translate to unit sales.

“I think there’s going to be a lot of great choice for consumers,” Brown continued. “I think we’re going to see a lot of dual purchases as well. FPS fans, I think, are likely to purchase and play both titles to debate the merits, the pros and cons of one versus the other.”

Battlefield 3 hits shelves on October 28th.
