Gamescom 2011: Nintendo Of Europe Spreads The JRPG Love

None

For perhaps the first time in Nintendo’s history, the gaming juggernaut isn’t giving Europe the short end of the stick. Coming off a history of poor PAL localizations and truncated release lists, Nintendo of Europe has brought the controversial Japanese RPG, Xenoblade Chronicles, to the Wii with a full English localization. Why is Xenoblade controversial? Because this title is not planned for release in North America.

Adding to the pain, both Pandora’s Tower and The Last Story—the latter of which comes from Mistwalker, and thus former Final Fantasy guru Hironobu Sakaguchi—have been confirmed as 2012 releases for Europe.

Both titles, along with Xenoblade Chronicles, were the focus of Operation Rainfall, the fan-run campaign to convince Nintendo of America to localize these titles for North American audiences. The campaign, unfortunately, has done little to change NoA’s mind on the matter. Is it a perceived lack of audience? Fear of drawing attention away from upcoming first-party release Zelda: Skyward Sword? Has NoA simply given up on the Wii, in preparation for the newly announced Wii U’s debut?

Whatever the reason, JRPG fans across America may cry foul, but some solace may be taken in the fact that these games, at the very least, will soon be available in English.
