GameStop’s DLC Sales Escalate

GameStop’s DLC Sales Escalate

None

It’s no secret that retailers like GameStop have been quite nervous about the popularity of DLC-based content. The fact that users can purchase their favorite games and add-on content without the need for a physical retailer has rattled them pretty heavily. But GameStop, Best Buy, and other retailers have fought back with extensive pre-order bonuses and rewards programs. And though skeptics may have balked at these methods, it looks like they might actually be working.

GameStop just released its financial information for last quarter, and apparently the gaming retail giant did surprisingly well with its DLC offerings—specifically the COD Escalation Map pack. In fact, “Escalation” has the record as the biggest DLC launch in history, selling over 200,000 copies in-store (with 50,000 of those being pre-orders). That’s a pretty staggering number considering most DLC is bought instantly using a console. GameStop is also reporting that its DLC sales are doing well overall, as they are up 53% over last year. Apparently, consumers are opting for familiarity over convenience, which certainly is an interesting trend.
