Though everyone was sure it was coming – except me – Apple announced today that the iPhone will soon get multitasking functionality. iPhone OS 4.0 is set to launch for the iPhone and iPod Touch this summer. What we did foresee was the expansion of gaming for Apple products. Though few hard details were made known at this time, Apple will introduce GameCenter; an online service, much like Xbox LIVE, Steam, and the PlayStation Network, for the iPhone and iPod Touch. The service will bring with it leaderboards, achievements, multiplayer matching, and party/game invites. While the new OS will bring full functionality to the iPhone 3GS and 3 rd -gen iPod Touch this summer, the newly-launched iPad will not get the features until several months later.
