Is Call Of Duty Abdicating Its Sales Throne?

None

Since the series’ seminal Modern Warfare title, Call of Duty has gone beyond “household name” and into the territory of “sales juggernaut.” Its upward growth seems limitless as each entry sees greater and greater presale numbers, with Modern Warfare 3 overshadowing even the highly anticipated Battlefield 3 (itself with preorders in line with those of last year’s Black Ops).

That said, Modern Warfare 3, despite seeing the fastest presales in series history, has been trumped. Epic’s Gears of War 3 sits atop the charts in North America, with over 1.2 million preorders for the Xbox 360-exclusive shooter. That’s twice Modern Warfare 3’s preorders on the Xbox 360, and it still beats out the game’s combined Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 sales by a significant margin of around 33 percent.

Could these phenomenal sales have anything to do with Gears of Wars 3’s highly publicized and extremely popular beta? Will its record hold up in the months leading up to Modern Warfare 3’s release? We’ll know come November.
