Mandatory Gaming Curfews on the Horizon*

Game over in 20 minutes. It’s for your own good.

In an attempt to combat the epidemic of child and teen obesity, a law have been quietly passed to force kids to get more exercise. The prime target is video games. Researchers claim that people that play video games on a regular basis are a hundred times more likely to be overweight and unhealthy. Studies have shown an alarming trend in the increase of cholesterol levels and heart disease in younger children. It’s not unheard of these days for a 12-year old to have a heart attack.

Although a diet of fried foods and salty and sugary snacks are also to blame, it’s reported that the sedentary nature of gaming is the catalyst that contributes to poor health. Experts agree that exercise is the single greatest cure. They know that the junk food diet is unlikely to change, but exercise will help burn those empty calories before they can harm the body.

Congress has passed a new law that video games will only be playable for a maximum period of 20 minutes. The law is not expected to take effect until 2011 so that programmers can develop the technology to implement this new system. After 20 minutes of gaming the player will have to look elsewhere for entertainment, and congress is hoping that will be in the form of exercise.

“We have to make this foolproof,” says concerned professor of nutrition Jerry Welfed, “our kids lives are at stake. In the future, every game will last for 20 minutes tops, and after that it will shut down and not be able to be restarted for a 24-hour period. That is, until the kids can show they are regaining their health. The gaming systems will be able to monitor their fitness level, and should any improvement be detected, the gaming system will allow for longer sessions. It’s reward-based, and we see that as positive,” says Welfed.

This new game curfew must be adopted by all manufactures worldwide. This means new high-tech software, new hardware, new games and new consoles. A retina scan will identify the player and allow the game to start. The controller will also take thumb and fingerprint readings during the play period to ensure that only the registered player is actually playing the game. All data will be uplinked to a central CPU, and will be in communication with all gaming systems worldwide, including arcades to prevent gamers from “getting a fix” elsewhere.

Sales of older gaming systems and respective games are expected to flood the black market.
