Microsoft Reaches Out To Free-To-Play Developers

None

When I said that “Free-To-Play” was the current buzzword in the gaming world, I didn’t know how right I was. The shift of Team Fortress 2 to a free-to-play model has opened up the floodgates for many other companies to do the same. In today’s news, a rumor has come down from Develop, saying that Microsoft is now contacting several studios “to discuss possible free-to-play game deals”. In addition, it is rumored that the Microsoft dev team is building a system for the 360 that will incorporate a micro-transaction service into the Xbox marketplace.

Three months ago, IGN ran a report about Microsoft bringing free-to-play games to Xbox live sometime in 2012. This might be the first step into making that plan happen.

Microsoft has offered no comment about this supposed plan, but Develop said that “several sources connected to the matter” said this was true. So once again take it with a grain of salt… Delicious, optimistic salt.

We will bring you more information about Microsoft’s free-to-play initiative as it becomes available.
