In an interview with OXM UK, Microsoft Game Studios VP Phil Spencer discussed the importance of Master Chief to the Halo fiction and how the series lost its way without him in its games. Master Chief wasn’t in the last two installments, Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach. In case you don’t know, he’s that faceless soldier who utters no more than a dozen lines throughout the entire Halo trilogy. But still, fans love him and apparently, Halo just isn’t the same without him. Regarding Halo 4’s big reveal at E3 last month, Spencer went on to say “We kind of lost our way a little bit, I’ll say. And that’s why I wanted to make sure that at the unveiling of Halo 4, you knew you were playing Master Chief, that John was back. Because Master Chief is the John Wayne character of that universe, and that’s who you want to play.”
