Minecraft Creator, Notch, Praises Valve’s SteamOS

Are you a Windows user? Are you a Windows user that has the new Windows 8 OS? Are you a Windows user that wants to throw your laptop against the wall because you hate the new Windows 8 OS? If you said yes to any of the above questions…I embrace you as friend.

I’m a PC guy, always have been. I’m not exactly anti-Mac, it’s just that PC is what I know and love. I’ve also been fond of Windows and, for all its faults, it’s been good to me. So, with the introduction of Windows 8, it completely flipped my life upside down with Microsoft fundamentally changing much of the core navigation of the operating system to better suit the “iPad” generation. Now, I’m not the only one to be upset by this, as Markus “Notch” Persson (creator of Minecraft) hated it so much he personally laid the smackdown on Microsoft via Twitter last year by saying: “I told them to stop trying to ruin the PC as an open platform.” This was in response to Microsoft’s request to certify Minecraft for its current OS.

In news that really shook up the OS landscape, Valve announced that it plans to release its own operating system (called SteamOS ) that will deliver their Steam products more efficiently, in what it calls “a gaming experience built for the big screen.” Its plan includes keeping the “open” nature of the OS available to developers as well as offering it as a free download to the public.

It would seem that Notch is now finding solace in the announcement, stating Valve is “saving the gaming world.”  Persson’s opinion obviously holds major sway in the gaming community as his huge hit, Minecraft , won five different awards at the 2011 Game Developers Conference, including the “Innovation Award”…so yeah, he should know.
