Minecraft Goes Gold

Minecraft Goes Gold

None

Last night, Markus “Notch” Persson made an announcement that surprised everyone and no one at the same time. Minecraft has been in perpetual Beta since it hit the internet in 2009, but Notch has been promising an official release for a very long time. Well, it looks like Mojang has finally delivered on the promise, and the internet is high fiving itself.

Notch casually tweeted “So, yes, Minecraft has gone gold. :D” last night and the announcement was retweeted by hundreds of Minecrafters nearly instantly. Many of the fans even added their own emoticons, because Notch’s simple smiley face didn’t quite capture the complexity of their emotional reactions.

The developer also added “If any game reviewers want to review Minecraft before the release on Friday, feel free to review the RC2. There might be VERY minor tweaks.” It seems so strange that Minecraft would only now be getting any kind of official review, considering its massive popularity.

It almost makes a game journalist like me feel slightly underappreciated. I thought we were supposed to tell you what to like.
