More Developments In New PS3 Model K

None

Yesterday, we ran a story about the new Model K PS3 Slim supposedly being unable to output HD video through a component cable. Instead, an HDMI cable would be required, a restriction that was not present on any past model of PS3.

Well, it turns out we were right and wrong at the same time. The new PS3 CECH-3000 series (as model K is called) will not require an HDMI cable for all HD outputs. It will require a cable for HD movies and video online. Games can still be played in HD through the use of a component cable.

The change was driven by the AACS Final Adopter Agreement, which is an unfortunately long 188-page document covering the ways an HD image or Blu-Ray signal can get to a television. Long story short, the agreement is phasing out analog video outputs. Instead, it stated 2013 as a cut-off point for going totally digital. “No player that passes ‘Decrypted AACS Content’ to analog video outputs may be manufactured or sold after December 31, 2013,” says the agreement.

Of course, by then we will be well on our way to the PS4 or whatever Sony is cooking up next, so it’s not likely to affect us gamers more than it already has at this point.
