Nintendo Isn’t Planning On Charging For Wii U Online

None

With the Wii U bringing Nintendo into a whole new world of online gaming (a world without friend codes and lag, that is), Nintendo fans are wondering if the big N is going to take Microsoft’s position of charging a monthly fee for their online service or Sony’s position of offering online play for free.

Well, according to Satoru Iwata, Nintendo had examined the possibility of a paid online service like Xbox LIVE, but they came to the conclusion that it’s not the right course of action. Iwata himself said that he feels a subscription fee would impede the potential grown of the platform.

Though this is good news for Nintendo fans looking to have a robust online experience on the cheap, it will also be interesting to see what effect this has on Microsoft. With the PSN being Xbox LIVE’s only competitor, gamers may have felt like paying for Xbox LIVE was worth it, just to be on the network their friends are on. However, now that there are two consoles that will offer free online play, gamers may be more likely to switch to a free online platform, taking away from Xbox LIVE’s player base.
