Phantasy Star Online 2 Brings Americans And Europeans Together

Launching earlier this month in Japan, Phantasy Star Online 2 is the free-to-play, currently PC-only sequel to one of the Dreamcast’s most enduring titles: action-RPG Phantasy Star Online (and its update, Ver. 2). The game saw multiple rereleases, appearing on the GameCube, original Xbox, and PC. It was also graced with a few successors, in the form of Episode III on the GameCube (sporting a card-based combat engine); Phantasy Star Universe on the PlayStation 2, Xbox 360, and PC, the Phantasy Star Portable games on the PSP; and Phantasy Star 0 on the DS.



But now the true sequel is out in Japan, and word has it that it’s coming to North America and Europe in 2013. In an interview with 4gamers, though, the game’s producer, Satoshi Sakai, revealed that, while the game will have distinct servers for different regions, North America and Europe will likely be sharing a server. Considering those are the two largest gaming sectors, each individually larger than Japan when it comes to PC gaming in particular, doesn’t this seem a little short-sighted?
