One of the cool features of the Xbox One is the ability to use external storage. Instead of having to open up your console and replace the internal harddrive, the Xbox One will simply allow you to hook up any USB hard drive and store your games and saves there. Or at least, that’s what we thought. Now, Microsoft’s Major Nelson is saying that external hard drive support won’t be ready for the Xbox One’s launch. “The Xbox One will ship with the 500 GB hard drive, all of them have that,” Nelsom said during a podcast recording at PAX 2013. “The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360. My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch, because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don’t know when it will come in though.”
Many fans are skeptical about how this external hard-drive support would work. Running games off an external PC hard drive tends to cause the game to slow down significantly. Then again, consoles like the Wii have been modded for external hard drive loading without any drop in speed whatsoever.
