Pokemon Dark Rising is a fan game based on the Pokemon franchise. While the main series of games continues to be developed by Game Freak, this title was made solely by DarkRisingGirl, an impressive achievement for a lone creator. Released back in 2017, Pokemon Dark Rising is a ROM hack of Pokemon Fire Red and has since become one of the most popular fan games around. You have to play the game via a Game Boy Advance emulator, meaning it technically is only available on PC.
Pokemon Dark Rising Premise
In Pokemon Dark Rising, you go through the motions with typical Pokemon gameplay. You start in a small town, meet your rival, pick your starter Pokemon, and so on and so forth. It’s classic Pokemon, down to the letter.
What really sets Pokemon Dark Rising aside is its blend of generations. It blends together elements from Generations 1 to 5, with 386 Pokemon to collect alongside the best moves from each. It even gives you a brand new Pokemon story to experience and a new land to explore. At times, the writing can be a little rough, and it’s the main reason you can tell this is a fan game. Overall though, we think Pokemon Dark Rising does a solid job of bringing together much of the franchise’s peak into one great experience.
Pokemon Dark Rising Main Characters
In every Pokemon game, the characters you meet along the way are a key part of the journey to becoming the very best (like no one ever was). Pokemon Dark Rising embraces that idea, and even brings back some iconic characters from the main series in smaller roles. You’ll meet the likes of Ash, Misty, and Brock, although they don’t quite play a main role in the story. Instead, here are all the main characters you’ll meet in Pokemon Dark Rising:
- The Protagonist: This is the character you play as. The first decision you make in Pokemon Dark Rising is whether your protagonist is a boy or a girl, and then the main story begins. Your character begins the game having strange dreams, in which a Pokemon is telling you to save the world. After brushing it off, you’re sent on an adventure by Professor Ivan, where it becomes clear that these visions may have been more than just dreams.
- The Rival: As with every Pokemon game, you have a plucky rival here. They begin the game as your best friend, but as you grow as a Pokemon trainer, they become more and more competitive. You’ll battle against them a few times in the story, comparing how you’re both progressing.
- Professor Ivan: Professor Ivan is the Pokemon Professor of Fells Town. He gives you your starter Pokemon, and sets you off on your grand adventure.
Pokemon Dark Rising Titles in the Series
As a fan game, Pokemon Dark Rising isn’t an official entry into the Pokemon franchise. However, it’s safe to assume that anyone with an interest in this fan game is a massive fan of the series as a whole. Pokemon is one of the most popular multi-media franchises of all time, with a video game history spanning back to the 1990s. There’s an absurd amount of spin-offs, with multiple games being released almost every year. It’s calmed a little in recent years, but at its peak, Pokemon was an unstoppable juggernaut. Here’s every Pokemon title ever released.

Pokemon Dark Rising Cheat Codes
Typically, to cheat in Pokemon games on GBA and Nintendo DS you would usually have to buy an Action Replay, or another similar cheat code cartridge. However, as Pokemon Dark Rising is only available via emulator, you’ll have to enter these cheat codes directly into your emulator of choice. We’re going to show you how to do it in Visual Boy Advance, the most popular GBA emulator.
First, launch the game and head to the Tools menu in Visual Boy Advance. From there, go to the Cheats tab and ensure Enable Cheats is ticked. Then head back to the Cheats Menu, and click List Cheats. There should be small green ticket button titled Add New Cheat. Click this, and you’re ready to enter this full list of Pokemon Dark Rising cheat codes. Beware: we wouldn’t recommend activating more than three of these at a time, as they can cause some issues for your game.

Pokemon Dark Rising Cheat Code FAQs
Why Are There So Many Pokemon Dark Rising Cheats?
In this case, it’s because the cheats for Pokemon Dark Rising are focused around individual Pokemon and items. If you’ve ever played a Pokemon game, you know that each one has plenty of items to collect, and Pokemon to catch.
Beyond the Pokemon and item cheats, there actually isn’t all that much you can do with the cheats in Pokemon Dark Rising.
Can I Cheat Any Other Pokemon Into My Game?
Sadly no. While Pokemon Dark Rising is based on Fire Red, the only Pokemon available to use are the ones that DarkRisingGirl put into the game. Even cheats can’t overcome that hurdle.
No need to worry though – Pokemon Dark Rising features most of the Pokemon from Generations 1 to 5, so there’s a very good chance your favorite has made the cut!
Are There Any Cheats I Can Input In-Game?
Nope. As we mentioned earlier, it’s going to take your emulator to get cheats running here. Sadly, DarkRisingGirl never included anything in-game, but there should be plenty here to keep you satisfied.
