Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Cheats & Cheat Codes for Xbox One, PlayStation 5, Windows, and More

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a virtual reality game based on the popular animated series, Rick and Morty. The game was developed by Owlchemy Labs and published by Adult Swim Games. The game’s original version launched in 2017 for the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift compatible with Microsoft Windows. In April 2018, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality also received a PlayStation 4 portal. Mark Justin Roiland, one of the show’s co-creators and the former voice of Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, aided in the development of the game. Three years after the game’s release, accusations of violence, abuse, and other charges came out about Roiland. Following suit, Adult Swim announced that Roiland would no longer have anything to do with the Rick and Morty franchise.

The game debuted with average-to-decent reviews. Steam rates Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality a 7 out of 10 and Meta Store rates it a 3.8 out of 5. IGN gave the game a 7.6 out of 10 and calls it good. Its main review of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality says it “gives fans a new way to explore Dimension C-137 and delivers a solid, though short, VR experience.” Metacritic also reflects mostly decent reviews, although it does highlight that it had more favorable reviews on Windows. The PS4 reviews sway towards mixed-to-average. That said, 95% of Google users who weighed in on the topic claimed to like the game.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality received two nominations after its release. In 2018, it was nominated for the Coney Island Dreamland Award for Best Virtual Reality Game at the New York Game Awards. In the same year, it was also nominated for SXSW Gaming Awards’ “VR Game of the Year”.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Premise

At its heart, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is a love letter to the Rick and Morty show. It was designed with the fans in mind, giving them a new way to experience the world of Rick and Morty. The player plays as a clone of Morty, a character called V.R. Morty. Rick creates V.R. Morty with the idea of using him to complete chores and other troublesome tasks that he and Morty can’t be bothered to do. These chores might include things like doing the laundry or up-keeping the spaceship. V.R. Morty receives commands from his wristwatch, where a hologram of Rick will deliver orders. Players can move around the game by warping and they can call Mr. Youseeks for help with tasks they can’t complete on their own.

Rick originally builds V.R. Morty in his garage, where he demands the clone do his laundry. Once the clone does as he’s told, Rick announces he’s no longer needed and shoots him. V.R. Morty is sent to “Purgatory”, but he’s able to return to Rick’s garage. Rick continues to use V.R. Morty to carry out menial or dangerous assignments but doesn’t treat the clone with any respect. At one point, Rick abandons the clone on a nature preserve where his ship crashed. He leaves the clone with the instruction to kill himself. Once again, V.R. Morty is sent to Purgatory and given the chance to return to Rick.

This cycle goes on for most of the game, leaving players scratching their heads at how many times they’ll end up dead at Rick’s hands. The plot twist is somewhat controversial, as some fans thought it was hilarious and ingenious, while others found it unrewarding.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Main Characters

As expected, Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality features the title characters from the Rick and Morty animated series. This game puts a lot of emphasis on these two characters, allowing them to shine in a brand-new medium. While there are some supporting characters, they never draw attention away from Rick and his grandson, Morty.

  • V.R. Morty: V.R. Morty, also known as Clone Morty, is the main protagonist and playable character of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. Rick creates Clone Morty in his garage for the simple task of doing laundry. Rick is too lazy to do such trivial chores, so he’d rather invent something else to do it. Rick shoots the clone once he finishes the laundry. Clone Morty ends up in Purgatory. The player has the choice to return to Rick’s garage, which they have to do to keep playing. V.R. Morty goes through several cycles of following Rick’s orders, dying, going to Purgatory, and then returning to Rick’s garage. The player has to play through all of these cycles to progress through the story, but it’s sometimes hard to watch how Rick treats the main character.
  • Richard Daniel “Rick” Sanchez: Rick Sanches is one of the two title characters of the Rick and Morty franchise and he’s at the center of Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality. Rick is a popular cartoon character, but he’s not a likable person. Rick displays many levels of toxic masculinity and fills the role of a lonely genius who doesn’t have friends but also doesn’t care about that. For Rick and characters like Rick, feelings are overrated. This fact is probably what allows Rick to repeatedly murder Clone Morty. Even though he created Clone Morty and the clone looks exactly like his grandson, it doesn’t stop him from executing the clone repeatedly. Rick lacks respect for authority and most other things, but his hilarious jokes and ridiculous approach to tackling his problems make fans love him all the more.
  • Mortimer Chauncey “Morty” Smith Sr.: Morty Smith is Rick Sanches’ grandson and Morty is everything that Rick isn’t. Morty is a teenager who struggles with anxiety and self-worth. He’s a kind-hearted teen who represents many struggles that kids face at that age. Morty is loosely based on Back to the Future’s Marty McFly. Morty acts as a buffer for Rick most of the time. Rick doesn’t care about much, including boundaries and morality. Morty, on the other hand, often has loud objections to the way that Rick handles things. His protests against Rick’s nihilism are the focus of most of the Rick and Morty series.

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality Titles in the Series

Rick and Morty: Virtual Rick-ality is based on the Rick and Morty animated series, but since its 2017 release, there have been no more games in this specific series. That said, a few Rick and Morty-themed games are floating around. Rick and Morty also became playable characters in the popular battle royale game, Fortnite. These characters have also made appearances in other games like Dota 2.
