In an exclusive report yesterday, The Verge unveiled Microsoft’s apparent plans for a subsidized Xbox 360. The unit would include the 4GB console and a Microsoft Kinect, along with a subscription to Xbox Live Gold for an initial $99 with a $15 fee every month for two years. It works out to being similar in total cost, over those two years, to the current Kinect bundle with two years of XBL Gold service, though slightly higher. Ostensibly, this is being done to position the Xbox 360 as a competitor to Apple TV and Roku, as well as the PlayStation 3’s streaming capabilities, as the focus here seems to be less on the 360’s capacity as gaming hardware and more as a media set-top box.
