Shadow Complex is one of those games that you’d probably never play unless you saw it at a friend’s house or got to try it yourself. When it first came out on the Xbox Live Arcade, a free demo was made available so I thought I’d check it out. Within minutes I was hooked, and as I sunk a few hours into the full version, I was absolutely blown away by how deep this game is. It ended up winning several awards, and it deserved them.
What you’ll hear the most is that Shadow Complex is a modern Super Metroid. There have been a handful of “Metroidvania” style games since the success of Shadow Complex , but at the time, it was breaking new ground in familiar territory. It’s that same hook: you explore a huge map full of secrets, constantly finding new weapons, armor, and tools. The more you find, the more incentive there is to backtrack to previous portions of the map and explore areas that you weren’t able to access previously, which of course lead to more weapons, armor, and tools. This remaster has been available on PC for some time, and now you can download it for your Xbox One for $15. It’s totally worth the price.
