Silicon Knights Lays Off Most Of Its Staff

Silicon Knights Lays Off Most Of Its Staff

None

Canadian developer Silicon Knights has reportedly laid off a large chunk of their staff this week. The layoffs came only four months after the Canadian Government awarded the company $3 million to expand their staff from 97 to 177 employees last summer.

What’s even weirder is that the governmental grant came on top of the $35 million that the SK had been collecting in grants and investments over the last 5 years. On paper, SK seemed to be doing fairly well.

There’s no word on why the layoffs were handed out, but the rumor mill has connected them with the recently released—and thoroughly disappointing—X-Men Destiny. Destiny was a critical and commercial failure, garnering a whopping 52% on Metacritic.

Hopefully this won’t spell the end of Silicon Knights. The developer had a pretty good run during Nintendo’s GameCube era, producing several of the system’s definitive games—including the legendary Eternal Darkness title. But it has been a while since they’ve had a genuine hit, and who knows how long they can remain on life support?
