Sony Coins Qriocity; Our Curiosity Piqued

None

Sony has gone ahead and trademarked Qriocity (pronounced curiosity), leaving industry insiders speculating on what the mark could possibly have in store for gamers.

According to the Word Mark application, as sleuthed out by Siliconera, Qriocity appears to be for “Electronic machines” including “Portable video game machines.”

Apparently, Qriocity will be an “on-line shopping mall with links to the retail web sites of others” and offer “Game services provided on-line from a computer network; entertainment services, namely, providing on-line computer games, music, video and related information” and “online distribution of music, image or video.”

Combining this with recent murmurings from Kotaku, which spied a Sony survey teasing that Sony may start charging for premium online content, and it looks like Qriocity may be Sony’s answer to Xbox LIVE.
