Sony Releases Standalone Messaging App

Sony Releases Standalone Messaging App

Sony has released a standalone, PSN message app for Android and iOS. At first I thought this was pretty good news, and then I went to the Google Play Store where I saw a total crap-storm of one-star ratings and hateful reviews from dozens (if not hundreds) of people. The PSN app had, until now, included messaging functionality which worked perfectly fine; I usually boot it up whenever I need to communicate with someone quickly and don’t feel like using the PS4 controller to type out my messages. The messaging functionality has been removed from the PSN app, and now if you want to send messages from your phone you’ll have to download the separate, PS Messages app to do so.

This is a little annoying, but the messaging app is pretty convenient. It’s less than 20 megabytes, and you’ll no longer have to refresh the chat every time someone sends a message; like Google’s Hangouts or the Facebook Messenger, the chat window acts as just that, and you can even start group chats with ease. Personally, I think it’s a major upgrade from the PSN app and I’ll be using it tonight to get a group together to play some Rainbow Six Siege. No word yet as to whether or not you can just refuse the PSN app update and continue to use the messaging function there, but I honestly wouldn’t recommend it.
