One generally only celebrates anniversaries for positive circumstances and momentous occasions. We’ve had a lot of those lately, with many of the most iconic gaming franchises hitting their 20 th or 25 th years and taking some steps to remind us of why they hooked us to begin with. Nintendo has been particularly ardent with this, holding year long celebrations Mario and Zelda, even taking some time to remember Kirby while they were at it.
Mario isn’t done yet, though. Twenty years ago, in 1993, the plumber and his brother were licensed for a live action movie, which famously had very little, if anything, to do with the original Super Mario Bros. In some circles, it has taken on an almost cult following, hitting on a “so bad it’s actually good” mentality. If you enter it with no actual expectations, it can certainly be entertaining. As such, the NuArt Theatre in Los Angeles, California is going to screen the film on Friday, May 24. The showing will be followed by a Q&A session with production designer David L. Snyder and screenwriter Parker Bennett.
