Super Mario Maker 3DS Won’t Support 3D

Super Mario Maker is a game that absolutely belongs on the 3DS. It makes as much sense on Nintendo’s handheld as it does on the Wii U, as both utilize a touch screen and stylus: perfect tools for the course creation suite that Mario Maker is famous for. While that course creation tool may come with features practically made for the 3DS, it seems not all 3DS features are practical for Mario Maker .

The official box art for Super Mario Maker for Nintendo 3DS has been revealed, and it didn’t take long for fans to notice a little disclaimer at the bottom of the box: “Plays only in 2D.” While that may come as a shock to some, anyone who knows how crazy things can get in Mario Maker will probably understand. Having 3D effects toggled fully on can impact game performance somewhat, and the course creation tools in Mario Maker allow users to create some very crowded, very busy levels. I think this makes a lot of sense, personally, and I can guarantee you based on my experience with the Wii U version that you’ll have tons of fun with this game – even in 2D.
