As with any gaming system, the mod/hack community can’t wait to get their hands on Kinect and use the product for different purposes. Although hacks for things like the Wii-Mote (which has been modified to do everything from control robots to double as a motion-sensitive PC cursor) have come in due course, apparently the mod/hack community can’t wait for the Kinect hacks to start pouring in, with one website offering a $2000 prize for the first person to successfully develop drivers for the Kinect hardware. Although hacking and modifying gaming peripherals isn’t a surprising practice, it is quite unusual for it to be promoted like this. Will Microsoft step in to stop would-be contest entrants? It would seem like an unlikely course of events, but then again, there has never been a rush like this one to hack a specific gaming product.  |
