The World of Warcraft Movie Killed It Overseas

The World of Warcraft Movie Killed It Overseas

World of Warcraft didn’t do well in terms of reviews. It’s at 28% on Rotten Tomatoes , making it a certified “rotten” title. On Metacritic , it’s at 32%. But none of that matters. Do you know why? Because the movie is killing it overseas. It’s passed the $375 million mark.

Here’s the thing. Over here in the US, World of Warcraft only brought in $24.1 million its opening weekend, then $6.5 million this past weekend. In other areas of the world, it took in $41.2 million this past weekend. At the moment, its overall total is $377.6 million, with $339.9 million of that coming from overseas. China alone has bought over $200 million worth of tickets. Crazy, right?

All of this means we’ll likely see a sequel. Even though the World of Warcraft movie tanked here and wasn’t the best, something doesn’t make over $377 million and not continue. On the plus side, this entry did seem to do a lot of setting up for additional movies, and another installment could go a long way toward making things right.
