Tomb Raider Movie Reboot

Tomb Raider Movie Reboot

Video game movies aren’t exactly well known for following the canon of their source material. Luckily, the team behind the new Tomb Raider movie is going to try. The upcoming movie will be based around the “new” Lara Croft, portrayed in the most recent Tomb Raider title. So she won’t be a badass treasure hunter as much as she is a struggling survivor. This means that the entire Tomb Raider movie series will reboot to fit this new image. Supposedly, this inexperienced Lara is more appealing to a younger generation of gamers.

“We were faced with a challenge that is rare with videogames, given that games are still quite a new medium: How to continue this franchise as it transitions from generation to generation, not only with hardware but players as well,” said Darrell Gallagher, head of studio at Crystal Dynamics, in an interview with Variety . “Seventeen years is a long life for videogames.”

Crystal Dynamics is working closely with GK films on this project to make sure that the movie’s Lara is the same Lara that we see in the videogames. “It was important for both of us to have a cohesive version of the franchise,” Gallagher said. “We didn’t want to see a film version that was a continuation of the old ‘Tomb Raider’ films.”
