UPDATE: New Scroll Brings Down WoW Servers

None

Earlier this week, Blizzard reworked its Scroll of Resurrection (a means of attracting lapsed players back into the World of Warcraft fold), with the controversial addition that it now instantly boosts one of a resurrected account’s characters to level 80. This is so that said players can immediately experience the new Cataclysm content, running from 80-85, which is also attached to the new-and-improved scroll.

The change has proven so popular, though, that Blizzard’s authentication servers couldn’t handle the sudden influx of returning players and went down. They’re back now, but for a game that has weathered millions of players, with a server infrastructure expanded over half a decade to accommodate the largest continuous player-base of any MMO (and of the sudden population spikes at expansion times), having a meltdown due to player demand is absolutely staggering. It’s a testament to just how popular the aging game remains to this day.
