Vigil Games Cuts Jobs, Changes Focus Of Warhammer

Vigil Games, the studio behind Warhammer 40,000: Dark Millennium, will lay off 79 employees next month, according to parent company THQ. The layoffs are part of a major overhaul of Dark Millennium itself.

While the game was originally planned to be an MMO, the newly reworked Vigil studio will change its focus to an “immersive single player and online multiplayer experience.” This makes it sound like the game will be a run of the mill sci-fi RPG when all is said and done. Here is what Brian Farrell, president and CEO of THQ had to say about the change.

“As previously announced, we have been actively looking for a business partner for the game as an MMO. However, based on changing market dynamics and the additional investment required to complete the game as an MMO, we believe the right direction for us is to shift the title from an MMO to a premium experience with single and multiplayer gameplay, robust digital content and community features. Because we believe strongly in the high-quality and vast creative work that is in production, this is the right decision for both our portfolio and for gamers devoted to this powerful property.”

THQ has not commented on whether or not these layoffs will affect other Vigil projects, such as Darksiders II, but has stated that it will not ship the sequel until it is “perfect.” A THQ representative said that the company will be working to help the laid off employees find new positions. The layoffs will begin on May 28.
