Blizzard Sues over WoW Bot

Blizzard Sues over WoW Bot

None

According to the BBC, Blizzard is in the process of suing Michael Donnelly, the creator of the MMO Glider program, for copyright infringement. The “bot”, which basically plays the game automatically for consumers, is claimed to be damaging to Blizzard’s MMO. In fact, Blizzard goes so far as to say that, “Blizzard’s design expectations are frustrated, and resources are allocated unevenly, when bots are introduced into the WoW universe, because bots spend far more time in-game than an ordinary player would and consume resources the entire time.”

Blizzard also claims that Michael Donnelly’s tool infringed upon the EULA that all parties have to adhere to when playing the game. Mr. Donnelly refutes the idea that his tool infringes Blizzard’s copyright because there has been no copying of the World of Warcraft game whatsoever. According to the BBC article, Blizzard combats this argument by saying that the tool does in fact infringe upon the copyright as it “copies the game into RAM in order to avoid detection by anti-cheat software.”

It’s a mess and will have to wait and see where this goes as both parties are awaiting the final decision from the Circuit Court.
