Capcom Enacts “One Save File Per Game” Policy

Capcom Enacts “One Save File Per Game” Policy

None

Remember the old days of the Super Nintendo where each cartridge had its own save file? You would rent a game just to realize that someone else had played it before you and you either had to start from the very beginning or play their game for them. Then the PlayStation came out and we graduated on to memory cards and hard drives, and managing our own save data simply became the norm.

Well, Capcom is looking to roll back the clock to the old days of cartridge saving with their new “one save file per game” policy. For example, if you play Resident Evil: The Mercenaries 3D, you will notice that you only have one save file available on the cartridge. What’s worse is that you can’t even reset it. In a way, this makes the game less flexible than a Super Nintendo game.

So why is Capcom enacting this policy with their portable games? It’s been speculated that it could be an attempt to discourage gamers from purchasing used games. Now, if you lend or give your game to a friend, they don’t even have a choice to wipe the data and play the game from the beginning.

We can only hope this doesn’t become a policy they adhere to in their other portable games. Just imagine playing Phoenix Wright without being able to go back to previous cases.
