Cliff Bleszinski says kids “…don’t know what a proper arena shooter is.”

Cliffy B. is definitely one of those figures in the game industry that you would call “polarizing.” Most people would say they either love him or hate him, and his recent comments may solidify those opinions.

Bleszinski is known for his work on the legendary shooter Unreal Tournament (among others), but feels that much of what shooters were in his heyday has been lost in the Call of Duty age. He also hints at an idea he’s kicking around, stating, “I have a pitch. I have concept art. I know pretty much what I want to do. It will be a PC experience that will hearken back to a certain type of game that we cut our teeth on…It’s in my DNA. A lot of these kids playing Call of Duty , I don’t think they know what a proper arena shooter is.”

Always outspoken and not one to worry about offending, Bleszinski may have done just that with his next comment. He lays the fault squarely at the feet of developers. He says, “… All these kids who love Sookie Stackhouse, they never watched Buffy . These kids who like The Walking Dead , they don’t know Dawn of the Dead and Day of the Dead . So it’s the same thing. Every 10 years. It’s cyclical. But the problem is you get developers who are in their 30s on up, and you get jaded developer syndrome.” .

No details yet on exactly what he’s working on, but when it breaks, we’ll bring it to you.
