Danganronpa Coming to Virtual Reality

Danganronpa Coming to Virtual Reality

Spike Chunsoft recently showed off its new Cyber Danganronpa VR: Class Trial project at Games Hong Kong 2015. What the heck is this, you ask? Well, it’s a virtual reality version of Danganronpa for Sony’s Project Morpheus.

If you don’t know what Danganronpa is, it’s a mystery solving visual novel/puzzle game with Phoenix Wright style trial elements. The game takes place entirely in first person and was released for the Vita.

It’s the first person view that makes this demo so interesting. During “class trials” in the game, you look left and right to a number of other students around you, pleading their cases for why they couldn’t be the murderer in any given mystery. The VR version works in much the same way, except you get to actually be in the room, and instead of still cut outs like the game uses, the VR version uses full polygonal models.

The tech demo isn’t actually part of a full game project, but this gives you an idea of what Project Morpheus can do with already existing franchises. After all, the Danganronpa series is still alive and thriving, and I would love to play a courtroom game in virtual reality. The only better thing would be if Phoenix Wright went VR and I could actually point my finger and shout “OBJECTION!”
