Devil’s Third Online Servers Closing at Year’s End (Updated)

Devil’s Third Online Servers Closing at Year’s End (Updated)

Update: The North American servers have been confirmed for shutdown on December 28, 2016. Golden Eggs will no longer be available as of June 27. The game’s price is going down to $30 today, June 23.

Original: I thought Mighty No. 9 had it bad, but at least people are still talking about it. I’d wager that years from now we’ll look back and talk about that game for one reason or another, even if it’s not positive. I can’t say the same for Devil’s Third . Remember Devil’s Third ? It was supposed to be this badass action game for the Wii U by a bunch of ex Team Ninja devs who left Tecmo. Tomonobu Itagaki continually talked it up like it was going to be Ninja Gaiden with guns on the Wii U and, honestly, who wouldn’t want that? It turned out pretty terribly, though. While getting decent reviews in Japan, its Metacritic score here in the US is a pretty discouraging 43. The game was loaded with technical issues, ran poorly, looked awful, and had a multiplayer mode built around microtransactions.

Devil’s Third hasn’t even been out a year yet, but it looks like it might already by dying. Nintendo has confirmed that in Japan (where it was reviewed more favorably) multiplayer servers will be shut down on December 29. The microtransaction system allowing players to purchase Golden Eggs will be shut down just a few days from now. To top it all off, the game’s price is being slashed in half. Hopefully Itagaki-san isn’t taking it too hard, because I expect Nintendo will follow suit in the West very soon. There were only a couple of months between releases, and it wasn’t even very popular here.
